Cessna 172 Takeoff Procedures

Normal Takeoff

  • Wing Flaps - 0˚

  • Carburetor Head - COLD

  • Throttle - FULL OPEN

  • Elevator Control - LIFT NOSE WHEEL @ 55 KIAS

  • Climb Speed - 70 - 80 KIAS

Short Field Takeoff (Maximum Performance Takeoff)

  • Wing Flaps - 0˚

  • Use All Available Runway

  • Carburetor Head - COLD

  • Brakes - APPLY

  • Throttle - FULL OPEN

  • Brakes - RELEASE

  • Elevator Control - SLIGHTLY TAIL LOW

  • Climb Speed - 59 KIAS UNTIL ALL OBSTACLES ARE CLEARED

Soft Field Takeoff

  • Wing Flaps - 10˚

  • Carburetor Head - COLD

  • Elevator Control - FULL AFT DURING TAXI & INITIAL TAKEOFF ROLL

  • Throttle - FULL OPEN

  • Elevator Control - AS NOSE LIFTS OFF, REDUCE ELEVATOR SLIGHTLY

  • As aircraft becomes airborne - LEVEL OFF IN GROUND EFFECT TO ACCELERATE TO Vx

  • Climb Speed - 70 - 80 KIAS
